YHSC members are really making a difference in the lives of people in their community. Students are volunteering between 10 to 50+ hours in health care settings that serve at-risk people like community health centers, homeless shelters and nursing homes. Students also complete health related service projects in an area that interests them. Already students have created projects that help people eat healthier, help children take care of their teeth and help high school students learn about sickle cell disease. In the works is a project focused on disaster preparedness. Students have decided to teach families what they need to do now to be prepared for a disaster.
YHSC members have an interest in becoming a health professional someday. But they don’t want to wait for someday to begin to make a difference in people’s lives. As a member of the YHSC they begin helping people live healthier lives right away.
One of the YHSC students in Connecticut received the President’s Volunteer Service Award for his work at a Community Health Center and a migrant farm worker clinic. Amarjet volunteers at a community health center that provides health care for people who can not afford it. He got to meet the President of the United States and talk to him about the people he works with who have a hard time taking good care of their health.
